In today’s world, we are learning so much about how vaccines help keep people healthy. Vaccines aim to protect people against getting sick with disease. By joining the CMVibe Trial, you are helping to study a potential new vaccine for cytomegalovirus (CMV).

You may not notice you have CMV when you’re first infected, but CMV could lead to serious issues if you have children someday when you are older. If you pass CMV to your unborn child, it can result in birth defects such as hearing loss, vision loss, and cerebral palsy.¹ Cerebral palsy makes muscle control difficult. Children with cerebral palsy may need special equipment to walk or may not be able to walk at all. They may also have joint problems, speech problems, or seizures.

If we could advance research of a potential vaccine for kids and teens like you against CMV, we may potentially be able to help protect future generations—those related to you and others around the world.

How is CMV passed from person to person?

CMV can be spread from person to person through bodily fluids, such as saliva (spit) and blood.

Will I miss school?

We will try to schedule visits so they don’t interrupt your school or activities. If you do miss school, you will be given an absence letter to take to your school.

Will I still be able to play sports and do other after-school activities?

You can discuss specific questions with the clinical trial doctor, but you should be able to continue your usual activities. The most frequently reported side effects from the trial vaccine, such as headaches and feeling tired, should not impact you much. If you do experience any side effects, they will likely go away quickly. Trial staff will work with you to schedule in-person visits, so they do not interfere with activities.
